* Eighteen months later, on May 14, 1210, Innocent wrote to Gilbert, bishop of Rochester, and Herbert, bishop of Salisbury, ordering them to publish the sentence of interdict on England and to enforce it fully (Letters of Innocent III to England and Wales, no. 868). One is left to wonder what the impact of a second interdict was supposed to have on John.
* The population of England in 1200 might have been 3 million. Estimates of what proportion of that population was free suggest about two-fifths, which would make 1.2 million people. Women were excluded from the oath swearing, as were those under fifteen (or twelve).
